Sydney-based proprietary software company Atlassian Corporation has signed a definitive agreement to acquire The Browser Company of New York, developer of the Arc and Dia browsers.
Atlassian is buying The Browser Company for about $610 million, including its cash reserves. The purchase will be paid for using Atlassian’s funds. The deal is expected to be finalised in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, pending regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.
Atlassian expects that this acquisition will not significantly impact its finances in fiscal years 2026 and 2027.
How does this acquisition work?
Today’s browsers were created before the rise of SaaS apps and the current AI trend.
They are primarily designed for everyday users, rather than knowledge workers who use them to complete tasks. For these workers, each tab represents a distinct workflow, such as scheduling a meeting or reviewing a design.
Unfortunately, current browsers don’t understand this context, which can slow down productivity.
“Today’s browsers weren’t built for work; they were built for browsing. This deal is a bold step forward in reimagining the browser for knowledge work in the AI era,” said Mike Cannon-Brookes, Atlassian’s CEO and co-founder.
To address this issue, Atlassian and The Browser Company are developing Dia, an AI-powered browser designed for work. Dia will be optimised for the SaaS apps that knowledge workers use daily, providing helpful context in each tab, including AI features and personal work memory to connect different apps, tabs, and tasks, and focus on trust and security to keep company data safe.
“By combining The Browser Company’s passion for building beloved browsers with our two decades of understanding how knowledge workers operate, we see a huge opportunity to transform the way work gets done. Together, we’ll create an AI-powered browser optimised for the many SaaS applications living in tabs – one that knowledge workers will love to use every day,” added Cannon-Brookes.
Moving faster, dream bigger
The Browser Company of New York (BCNY) created two new web browsers, Dia and Arc, which have gained millions of users.
Atlassian has over 300,000 customers, including more than 80% of the Fortune 500, which means it can introduce Dia to millions of new users.
The company is also skilled at using AI, with over 2.3 million active users on its platform, which is growing by more than 50% every quarter.
“For laptop workers, your browser is where your job actually happens – where you spend hours working within tabs every day,” said Josh Miller, The Browser Company’s CEO and co-founder. “That context, plus access to your tools, is incredibly valuable for AI. Atlassian gets that. Teaming up means we can move faster, dream bigger, and focus on building an AI browser for work that people genuinely love to use – one that is trusted by companies but feels personal to every individual.”
